Matrescence

Matrescence. The process of becoming a mother. Think adolescence but with a lot less sleep and a lot more responsibility. A word that makes space for the hormonal, physical, emotional, mental and social upheaval that accompanies any and all stages of becoming a mother: fertility struggles, conception, miscarriage, pregnancy, birth, infant loss, surrogacy, adoption, and the post natal period.

I want to offer you a warm space during the metamorphosis- in the throes of excitement, anxiety, uncertainty, and maybe even sadness of discovering who you are now. Whether or not you are the one who gave birth to your baby, you are the one who will give birth to yourself. I’d like to be right next to you, guiding you and cheering you on.

I thought early motherhood would be gentle, beatific, pacific, tranquil: bathed in a soft light. But actually it was hard-core, edgy, gnarly. It wasn't pale pink; it was brown of shit and red of blood. And it was the most political experience of my life, rife with conflict, domination, drama, struggle, and power.
